    Research Areas

Design , development and characterisation of pi-conjugated macromolecules
Pi conjugated  macromolecules are interesting candidates for many opto-electronic applications. Our group is interested in the development of different pi-conjugated systems and fine-tuning of their physico-chemical characteristics  by appropriate substitutions.  Typical programmes examine  the opto-electrical features of  1,3,4 oxadiazole and imidazole based  macromolecules.

and  Nonlinear Optical Applications                                       Systems   for Organic Electronics

    Nanocomposites  for biomedical applications

The focus of this part of our work is the  development and characterisation of   biocompatible,  efficient drug delivery  systems based on polymer nanocomposites   We try to modify the characteristics of polymers by using suitable nano-modifiers. Poly(lactic acid) modification by nanocellulose is a recent contribution from our group. An ultrasonic investigation of the interaction between silicone rubber and nanohydroxy apetite particles  is another recent work from this  area.

    Blend membranes

Chemical modification of biomacromolecules  and blending them with appropriate synthetic/ natural macromolecules for specific applications (typically drug release)  is another area of our interest . Of late , we reported the  modification of natural rubber latex (and its deproteinised version) with dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate , using a redox initiator system  and subsequent blending with poly vinyl alcohol .  The properties such as hydrophilicity, film forming ability , resistance to oxidation  and adhesion have been found to be favourably modified through the strategies followed.

We also try to investigate the cure, mechanical, thermal , ageing and transport features of blends modified by novel fillers    The filler type, loading and distribution within the matrix are being examined to characterise the systems for specific applications.

    Blends: physico-chemical modifications

    Hierarchical zeolites for organic synthesis

Conventional zeolites have pore sizes which restrict them from the catalysis involving. bigger molecules  We modify zeolites through suitable routes and cause pore enlargement which then can facilitate the anchoring of bigger molecules in their channels to execute catalysis faster.

    Zeolite modification by macrotemplates

Modulation of macromolecular characteristics  by doping with inorganic complexes

Many inorganic  complexes offer the opportunities for excellent  modulation of optical properties of macromolecules.  We synthesise different organic ligands, link them with suitable transition and inner transition metals and then  integrate them with macromolecules  for optical and electrical applications.

Inorganic Complex Doped Polymer for optical applications

    Transport characteristics of membranes

Under this area we try to develop novel membranes and characterise them in terms of kinetic and thermodynamic aspects. The flux and separation efficiency of the membranes are being evaluated.
