The Department of Bioscience and Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Calicut is committed to excellence in education, research, and innovation in the rapidly evolving fields of biosciences and bioengineering. Established with the aim of addressing global challenges through biotechnology, the department has grown to become a hub of multidisciplinary research and academic excellence.

Mission

  • To bring about well qualified biotechnology graduates with utmost learning in basic and advanced concepts in different fields of biotechnology.

  • Equip the students with recent technical, practical and managerial skills to excel in industry, higher studies and entrepreneurship.

  • Promote research in health science, agriculture as well as basic life science using cutting edge technology for the betterment of society

Academic Programs:

- Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Biotechnology: A comprehensive undergraduate program that combines the principles of biology and engineering, preparing students for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and related fields. The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in molecular biology, bioprocess engineering, bioinformatics, and more, with opportunities for hands-on research and industry exposure.

- Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Bioengineering:*An advanced program that delves into the application of engineering principles to biological systems. The M.Tech program emphasizes research and innovation, equipping students with the skills and knowledge required to excel in areas such as tissue engineering, biomaterials, and medical devices. Graduates are well-prepared for roles in research and development, academia, and the biotechnology industry.
 

Research Focus:

Our faculty members are actively engaged in pioneering research in several cutting-edge areas, including but not limited to:
- Microbiology: Exploring microbial diversity, physiology, and applications in environmental and industrial biotechnology.
- Cancer Biology: Investigating molecular mechanisms of cancer, developing novel diagnostics and therapeutic strategies.
- Bioinformatics: Utilizing computational tools to analyze biological data, advancing personalized medicine, and understanding complex biological systems.
- Bioprocess Technology: Innovating sustainable processes for the production of biofuels, biopharmaceuticals, and other bio-based products.
- Neuroscience: Understanding the nervous system at molecular, cellular, and systems levels, with implications for treating neurological disorders.
- Bioengineering: Developing medical devices, biomaterials, and technologies for improving human health.
- Tissue Engineering: Creating artificial tissues and organs for transplantation and disease modeling.
