3-day workshop on 'Trends in Quantum Physics (TQP): Past, Present and Future'
As part of celebrating 100 years of quantum mechanics, Department of Physics, NIT Calicut is organising a 3-day workshop on Quantum Physics titled 'Trends in Quantum Physics(TQP): Past, Present and Future' from September 18-20, 2025. The participants will be given an overview of the latest trends and developments in quantum physics from eminent researchers in the field. Lectures are planned at a pedagogical level to give a bird's eye view of the subject. The topics to be covered:
Quantum Mechanics - History and Foundations
Quantum Information Theory
Open Quantum Systems
Quantum Condensed Matter
Computational Approaches to Quantum Mechanics
Venue: Department of Physics, NIT Calicut
Date: 18th to 20th September 2025 : Details

5 day GIAN course on SOFT MATTER IN PHYSICS, BIOLOGY AND MATERIALS SCIENCES: PROGRAMMABILITY, ACTUATION AND RECONFIGURABILITY
Soft Matter encompasses a broad variety of systems (colloids, polymers, interfaces, gels, complex fluids, liquid crystals, surfactants, etc.) and phenomena (wetting, adhesion, capillary phenomena, adsorption, etc.). The proposed GIAN course will explore the highly interdisciplinary nature of soft matter, ranging from physical to biological systems. Active soft matter, soft DNA nanotechnology, synthetic biology, drops and liquid marbles, programmability and actuation methods, soft surface engineering and reconfigurable photonics, are some of topics that will be presented in a unique transversal manner. Total of 28 hours activities are divided as 14 lecture and 14 tutorial hours. In addition, there will be a 3 hours examination. The foreign faculty, Prof. Damien Baigl, Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) Paris, who is a renowned researcher in soft matter, will handle more than 67% of the course contents. The program is planned in such a way that the tutorials/lab sessions complement with the topics covered in the lectures. Participants will be exposed to experimental soft matter systems, and will get hands-on training on fabrication as well as characterization of the same. In addition, a couple of brain-storming sessions are included where participants have to do a group project and present in front of the audience. Considering the interdisciplinary nature of the topics, it is expected that the program will be highly beneficial to the participants with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Materials Science backgrounds.

Confluentia : The yearly in-house symposium of Department of Physics
Confluentia is the yearly in-house symposium of Department of Physics, NIT Calicut. This programme is meant as a friendly platform for the faculty and students of the department to present their work and interact. The goal is to develop an atmosphere of free discussions among people working in various fields and promote interdisciplinary research within the department. It also provide an arena for students (UG, PG and PhD) to develop presentation skills in a low stakes platform.
