Vibration and Control Laboratory Inaugurated at NIT Calicut

The Vibration and Control Laboratory at the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut) was inaugurated by Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT Calicut, marking an important addition to the Institute’s research and teaching infrastructure in the areas of vibration and control.

The laboratory has been established as a dedicated facility for the experimental investigation of vibration phenomena, dynamic systems, vibration measurement, and vibration control. Equipped with modern instrumentation and experimental platforms, the laboratory supports vibration excitation, displacement and acceleration measurement, force measurement, data acquisition, and real-time control.

A distinctive feature of the laboratory is that several experimental setups have been indigenously designed and developed by students associated with the laboratory, under the supervision and guidance of the lab-in-charges. These facilities support experimental studies ranging from fundamental single- and multi-degree-of-freedom vibration systems and modal characterization to advanced research in rotor dynamics and nonlinear vibrations, synchronization and dynamic systems, vibration isolation, metamaterial-based vibration and force mitigation, active vibration control, structural and metamaterial characterization, and experimental vibration and force-response measurements.

The laboratory’s experimental capabilities complement analytical and computational research and provide valuable support for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, student projects, and externally funded research.

The laboratory has also been actively involved in sponsored research supported by agencies including SERB, ARDB–DRDO, and ISRO, in addition to institutional funding. Its research activities encompass areas such as rotor dynamics, nonlinear vibrations, metamaterials, synchronization, and experimental vibration control.

The Vibration and Control Laboratory is headed by Dr. Ashesh Saha, Dr. Allen Anilkumar, and Dr. Amit Kumar Rai, who serve as the Lab-in-Charges. The facility is expected to further strengthen NIT Calicut’s capabilities in experimental research, innovation, and advanced education in vibration and control engineering.
