Strengthening Materials Innovation: NIT Calicut Launches Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) Student Chapter
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Calicut proudly inaugurated the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) Student Chapter, marking a significant milestone in fostering academic excellence, professional networking, and industry engagement in materials and metallurgical engineering.
The Student Chapter was inaugurated by Prof. B. S. Murty, President of the Indian Institute of Metals and Director of IIT Hyderabad, in the distinguished presence of Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT Calicut, who presided over the function.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, the event served as the venue for the simultaneous virtual inauguration of the IIM Student Chapters at IIT Indore and MNIT Jaipur, symbolizing a collaborative initiative to strengthen the nation's materials engineering ecosystem.
The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Telagathoti Suresh Kumar, followed by an inspiring address from Brig. Arun Ganguli (Retd.), Secretary General of the Indian Institute of Metals, highlighted the role of professional societies in nurturing future engineers and researchers. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Sajith V., Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. B. S. Murty emphasized the critical role of young engineers in realizing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India. He encouraged students to move beyond conventional career paths and become innovators, entrepreneurs, and technology creators who can transform research into impactful startups.
