The three-day Skill Development Program (SDP) on “GIS Basics for Urban Planning” being organized by the Centre of Excellence in Urban Planning and Design, NIT Calicut started at Manuelsons Malabar Palace, Calicut on 26th February 2025.

Prof. Naseer M A, Vice-Chairman, CoEUPD and the Coordinator of the SDP gave the welcome address. This was followed by the presidential address by Prof. P P Anilkumar, Chairman, CoEUPD. In his address, Prof. P P Anilkumar briefed about the CoEUPD and its role in Capacity Building of the Officials of Urban Planning domain in the Country. He elaborated on the mandate of the Centre and its commitment in imparting training, consultancy and research in the field of urban planning.

The Chief Guest of the function, Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director NIT Calicut inaugurated the SDP by lighting the lamp. He highlighted the importance of upskilling and the importance of mastering tools such as GIS especially in Urban Planning as India is marching towards Amrith Kaal. The Training Manual prepared by the Centre was released by Prof. Prasad Krishna.

Dr. Bimal P, the Joint Coordinator of the SDP briefed about the purpose and content of the Program and delivered vote of thanks.

Spanning over three days from 26th to 28th February 2025, the SDP will give training on Geographic Information System and its application in Urban planning. The SDP has hands-on session to make the participants work on software. The SDP include a field visit to Kariathanpara as a part of the field data collection.

In addition to Prof. Naseer M A and Dr. Bimal P, various sessions of the SDP are handled by Dr. Sanil Kumar, Assistant Professor and Member in charge of Training of CoEUPD and Dr. Binoy B V, Training Program Coordinator of CoEUPD .
