NITC’s Sci-Fest draws good participation of students

Sci-Fest, a science expo cum workshop organised by the National Institute of Technology Calicut drew good participation from school students. Around 250 high school students from various schools across Kerala reached the institute on Thursday to exhibit their prototypes and to get hands-on experience with the laboratory facilities and innovations at NIT Calicut.

The programme was jointly organised by the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) and the National Service Scheme. Student participants visited the laboratories of various Engineering Departments on the campus.

Sci-Fest was inaugurated by Prof. J Sudhakumar, Director-in-charge of NIT Calicut. NITC aims at spreading knowledge and technology to other institutions and local communities, he said during the inaugural address.

Interactive sessions by expert faculty on different topics were the highlights of the event. Prof. A Sujith from the Department of Chemistry, Dr. M. Niyas from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Dr. Subramanyan Namboodiri Varanakkottu from the Dept. of Physics led the interactive sessions.

Students were divided into different groups and taken to different labs. The participating students exhibited their prototypes at the expo. Students were given the opportunity to present working models of their science projects also.

The Science Expo provided the students with an excellent platform to demonstrate their scientific skills and innovative projects. The display of prototypes by school students helped them get expert opinions from the faculty of the Institute. They also offered suggestions for improvement. Awards and prize money were distributed to the best school student projects.

Dr. M. Preethi, Vice President of IIC and CEO of Technology Business Incubator at NITC introduced the mentoring support offered by IIC for schools. Prof. S. Ashok, Chairperson of Centre for Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Incubation; Dr. Reju George Mathew, NSS Cell Program Coordinator; Dr. Vinesh K. P., Programme Coordinator of IIC, Mr. Marvan Saleem, student coordinator of NSS were also present.
