NITC observes Independence Day with enthusiasm
The 78th Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at NIT Calicut. The ceremonies began at 9:00 a.m. at the Guru Rabindranath Tagore Theatre, where Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NITC, unfurled the National Flag. He also inspected the guard of honour presented by the NCC cadets.
He was joined by Subedar P V Manesh, Shaurya Chakra Awardee and Chief Guest of the day; Cd. Dr. Shamasundara M S, Registrar; Prof. Sathyananda Panda, Dean (Student Welfare); and Sub Lt. (Dr.) Chandrashekar Besta, Commanding Officer, NCC, NITC. Students staged cultural programmes highlighting the spirit of patriotism and unity to add vibrance to the celebrations.
In his address, Prof. Prasad Krishna spoke about India’s rich cultural heritage and the nation’s remarkable progress since independence. He also highlighted the recent contributions of NIT Calicut towards scientific and technological advancements and encouraged the NITC community to continue working for the betterment of the country and the world.
India is shining now and with its young population India will grow faster in the coming days, said Prof. Prasad Krishna. He also pointed out the role of science and technology for the growth of the country.
The presence of Subedar P V Manesh as the chief guest of the event was a real inspiration for the NITCians. A brave leader who embodies the true essence of courage—not only as a former NSG commando who bravely faced terrorists during the 26/11 attacks at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai but also as a survivor who fought his way back from a severe head injury sustained during that operation, he spoke about his journey as an NSG Commando and fighter.
His journey from the harrowing battlefield to the long road of recovery is a testament to his unyielding spirit and determination. Recalling the 26/11 operation, Subedar Manesh shared how his team was called from Delhi to confront the terrorists. His narration of how they successfully neutralised one grenade and how the next grenade exploded, and shrapnel struck his skull, leaving him unconscious instilled pride in all.
The 26/11 attack was bigger than even the Terrorist attack on America as there were only three target locations whereas in India the terrorists targeted 8 locations. He also urged the students of NITC to make the country proud. “Students of NIT Calicut have the best calibre and talent,” he said asking them to work hard and contribute their share to the country.
