NIT Calicut Welcomes Over 2300 New Students in Grand Orientation Program

National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut) successfully conducted an expansive orientation program to welcome its new undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and Ph.D. scholars for the academic year 2024-2025. The event witnessed the participation of more than 2300 new students, including over 1300 UG students, over 800 PG students, and over 200 Ph.D. scholars, along with their parents.

The UG orientation program was inaugurated by Shri Snehil Kumar Singh, District Collector of Kozhikode and a distinguished alumnus of IIT Roorkee’s 2014 batch. In his inspiring address, the District Collector emphasized the importance of holistic development, urging students to balance academic achievements with extracurricular pursuits. 

He remarked, “Scoring grades is not the only measure of success. Exams do not define your worth. What matters is how you utilize your knowledge and skills.” Shri. Snehil Kumar Singh also called on students to be "carbon conscious" and to channel their expertise toward addressing global challenges, especially considering the limited resources available. He stressed the need for innovation across all sectors, stating, "India is looking to you for solutions."

Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut, echoed the importance of personal growth, advising new UG students to focus on self-improvement rather than competing with others. "The competition should be with oneself to strive for continuous betterment," he added.

The PG orientation program was inaugurated by Prof. J. N. Moorthy, Director of IISER, who highlighted the critical role of the intersection between science, technology, and society. In his keynote speech, Prof. Moorthy underscored how advancements in these fields contribute significantly to national security, social welfare, and overall development. He lauded the growth of India’s higher education sector, noting the expansion from 21 universities in 1947 to 1,265 today, alongside over 50,000 colleges nationwide.

Addressing the PG students, Prof. Prasad Krishna urged them to transcend the boundaries of their specific programs and rise to the challenges posed by contemporary global issues. He emphasized the pivotal role of the youth in achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047.

The orientation program also featured addresses by Dr. A.V. Babu, Dean (Academic); Cdr. Dr. M.S. Shamasundara, Registrar; Dr. Raju Dey and Dr. Preeti Navaneet, General Convenors of the UG/PG Orientation.

Subsequent sessions included insights from Dr. Sathyananda Panda, Dean (Students’ Welfare); Dr. K. Haribabu, Chairperson, Council of Wardens; Dr. N. Sandhyarani, Dean (Research & Consultancy); Dr. Sudheer A.P., Chairperson, CIEI; Dr. Arun F. Adrakatti, Deputy Librarian; Dr. Praveen Sankaran, Chairperson, Centre for Career Development; Dr. M. Yogesh Kumar and Dr. Vrinda Varma, Faculty Coordinators of the Student Guidance Cell; Dr. Ravi Varma, Dean (IACR); and Dr. Arun P., Convenor of the Healthcare and Wellness Committee.

This comprehensive orientation marked the beginning of an exciting academic journey for the new students, equipping them with the necessary insights and inspiration to navigate their time at NIT Calicut effectively.
