NIT Calicut Signs PPA for 1.2 MW Rooftop Solar Project under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a flagship initiative launched by the Government of India in the Union Budget 2024–25 with an investment of over ₹75,000 crore, aims to promote rooftop solar power adoption across the country by covering nearly one crore households and providing up to 300 units of free electricity per month to beneficiary families.
As part of this national mission, the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. (SECI), a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, has selected Vyomaa Energy, a reputed renewable energy services company based in India, for the implementation of rooftop solar power projects at NIT Calicut.
In this connection, a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) has been signed between Vyomaa Energy and the National Institute of Technology Calicut for the implementation of a 1.2 MW rooftop solar power project at the Institute. The project is expected to significantly contribute to clean energy generation, reduce carbon footprint, and support NIT Calicut’s commitment towards sustainability and renewable energy adoption.
The rooftop solar project was a long-cherished initiative of the Centre for Clean Energy and Circular Economy (CCE&CE), NIT Calicut, realised under the leadership of Dr. Shaija A., Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Chairperson of the Centre, with Dr. Deepa S. N., Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, and Ar. Kiriti Sahoo, Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture and Planning, serving as Vice Chairpersons. The initiative was ably supported by Centre members Dr. Vivek Mohan and Dr. Devesh Shukla, with active support from the Superintending Engineer and the Executive Engineer (Electrical), Engineering Unit. The multidisciplinary Centre facilitates the convergence of institutional activities in clean energy and circular economy, aligned with national goals and missions. Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT Calicut, appreciated the dedicated efforts of the Centre in materialising the project, underscoring its significance in advancing sustainability, renewable energy adoption, and reduction of the Institute’s carbon footprint.
