NIT Calicut Partners with PwC India to Develop World-Class International Hall of Residence under PPP Model

The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut) has taken a significant step towards strengthening its campus infrastructure and enhancing its international student facilities by signing an agreement with PricewaterhouseCoopers Private Limited (PwC India) to serve as the Transaction Advisor for the proposed International Hall of Residence and associated facilities under the Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT Calicut; Prof. A. Shaija, Dean (Planning and Development), NIT Calicut; Mr. Saurabh Bhatia, Director, PwC India; and Mr. Nidish Nair of PwC.

Under the 12-month engagement, PwC India will provide comprehensive advisory support to the Institute, covering project feasibility assessment, the development of an appropriate PPP structure, preparation of bidding documents, and the formulation of a concession agreement. The advisory firm will also assist NIT Calicut in exploring and securing Viability Gap Funding (VGF) from the Government of India, where applicable, and guide the Institute through the process of selecting a suitable developer.

As part of the assignment, PwC will undertake a detailed assessment of the demand for and supply of student accommodation and benchmark the proposed project against leading national institutions. It will develop a robust financial model, evaluate the project's financial viability, and assess the requirement for VGF to support its implementation.

The engagement will also include recommending a suitable PPP model, defining the allocation of risks and responsibilities between the Institute and the private partner, and designing a performance-linked payment mechanism. PwC will prepare the Request for Proposal (RFP), the draft Concession Agreement, and the necessary documentation for the VGF application, while supporting the Institute in obtaining the requisite approvals from the Government of India.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT Calicut, described the partnership as “a bold step towards world-class infrastructure for our global student community.” He emphasised the Institute's commitment to creating a modern, inclusive, and globally competitive campus environment that meets the evolving needs of its diverse student community.

The proposed International Hall of Residence is an important initiative in NIT Calicut's broader campus development vision. By leveraging the PPP framework, the Institute aims to explore sustainable and efficient approaches to developing high-quality student accommodation and associated facilities, while drawing on private-sector expertise and structured project implementation.

The partnership reflects NIT Calicut's forward-looking approach to infrastructure development and its growing international outlook. It reinforces the Institute's commitment to providing an enabling campus environment for students from India and abroad, further strengthening its position as a leading institution in technical education and research.
