NIT Calicut Observes World Environment Day 2025: A Pledge to End Plastic Pollution
In line with the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution”, the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) commemorated World Environment Day 2025 with a series of impactful initiatives focused on sustainability, awareness, and community engagement.
Jointly organized by the Centre for Sustainable Technologies and the Centre for Clean Energy and Circular Economy, the day’s events brought together faculty, students, staff, and frontline workers in a united call for environmental stewardship.
Highlights of the Day
Inaugural Address
Professor Prasad Krishna, Director NIT Calicut, delivered an inspiring address, emphasizing the need for the academic community to lead by example in reducing plastic use. He called for stronger institutional commitment through innovation, policy, and collective action to combat the global plastic crisis.
Tree Plantation Drive
Native tree saplings were planted across the campus, symbolizing NITC’s commitment to ecological restoration and long-term sustainability.
Awareness Walk
A large turnout of students, faculty, and staff participated in a campus-wide awareness walk, spreading the message of plastic-free living and responsible consumption.
Launch of Campus Plastic Waste Reduction and Management Policy
A major milestone of the day was the official release of NITC’s strategic policy document for plastic waste reduction. The policy outlines actionable measures for reducing single-use plastic, encouraging waste segregation at source, and promoting sustainable alternatives.
Interactive Session with Campus Workers
In recognition of their invaluable contributions, sanitation workers and security personnel were engaged in an interactive session. Their insights and feedback were welcomed to help implement the new plastic waste policy effectively on the ground.
Expert Talks
Two invited expert sessions provided broader perspectives and practical approaches to tackling plastic waste:
Mr. Nipun Ganesh (Clean Kerala Company Ltd., Kozhikode)
Spoke on the Kerala Model for Solid Waste Management, highlighting the effectiveness of decentralized and community-driven waste management practices.
Mr. Suraj Varma (Carbon and Whale)
Delivered a talk on Plastic Waste Valorization and Sustainable Product Design, showcasing how circular economy principles can convert plastic waste into valuable resources.
Through education, engagement, and policy-driven action, NIT Calicut reaffirms its commitment to building a plastic-resilient and environmentally responsible campus, contributing meaningfully to the global movement against plastic pollution.
