NIT Calicut gets nod for new ladies’ hostel

The 10-storey building will have 380 double room

National Institute of Technology Calicut plans to construct a new ladies' hostel to accommodate the women candidates joining undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes at NITC. The number of female candidates joining NITC has increased considerably in the recent years.

A 10-storey hostel building complex with three blocks is planned near the existing ladies' hostel as the institute is focusing on infrastructure development. The Ministry of Education has approved a project submitted by NIT Calicut.

The hostel is proposed to be constructed with all state-of-the-art facilities, said Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut. The hostel is designed as disabled friendly, allowing effortless movement of differently abled occupants to every corner of the building, he added.

The building will have 380 double-seated rooms and the capacity to accommodate 760 women.

The hostel work will be carried out with the support of HEFA (Higher Education Financing Agency). The estimated cost for the project is Rs 71.85 crore, said Prof. Priya Chandran, Dean (Planning and Development). The hostel will have two dining blocks on two floors, she said, adding that there will be separate facilities for vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisines.

The design of the building was completed with the extensive support of experts from the Department of Architecture, Civil and Electrical Engineering. The experts from the Engineering Unit of NITC were also involved in the planning stages of this project.

The institute currently has 13 hostels, including two mega boys’ hostels and an international hostel. Different hostels offer single-bed, double-bed, triple bed and four-bed accommodation to students. Separate hostel facilities are available for undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students. All the hostels have separate dining facilities and other amenities.

At present, there are Ladies Hostels with four blocks and a Mega Hostel for Ladies to accommodate lady students of UG, PG and Ph. D. Programmes. These hostels are located within the residential area of the campus.

Four cosmopolitan messes are available within the ladies’ hostel premises. Facilities like an indoor shuttle court, basketball court, gymnasium, cooperative store counter, laundry, tailoring shop, DTP centre etc. are also located on the premises of the Ladies' Hostel.

The Central Public Works Department is the implementing agency for the project, said Dr Sajith A. S., Professor of Civil Engineering and superintending Engineer (in charge), Engineering Unit of NIT Calicut. The period of execution of the project is 24 months, he added.
