NIT Calicut excels in NIRF ranking

All India 2nd in Architecture, 8th in Innovation

Big leap from 31st to 23rd position in Engineering at the national level

NIT Calicut has achieved a significant improvement in its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking across multiple categories. The institute's dedicated effort has earned its recognition in the domains of Innovation, Engineering, Architecture & Planning, and Management.

NIT Calicut retained its second position in Architecture in NIRF ranking 2023 for the third consecutive year. In the Architecture stream, it has improved its score in all the major ranking parameters related to teaching, research, sponsored research and consultancy. The institute’s continuous efforts on shaping future professionals in the field of Architecture and Planning has resulted in retaining its position in the NIRF assessment. For Architecture & Planning, the position of NIT Calicut is not only the best among all the 31 NITs in the country but also better than even old generation IITs like IIT Kharagpur.

NIRF ranking for innovation is to rank the institutions in "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development" amongst students and faculty members. NIT Calicut is ranked 8, improving its position from last year’s 9, and is the only NIT to obtain a rank within the first 10 positions. Earlier the ranking was named as ARIIA ranking and this is the first time it is integrated with NIRF ranking. NIT Calicut strongly supports the move towards a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) by having indigenous product development by many students and faculty members through various initiatives and the Technology Business Incubation centre of the Institute. The institute has also established a dedicated Centre for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Incubation through which the institute aims to excel in these fields.

In the Engineering stream, NIT Calicut obtained All India 23rd rank by improving 8 positions from last year’s 31. NIT Calicut has improved significantly in all the ranking parameters which include innovations, research, consultancy, teaching & learning and graduate outcome. The improved placement, pay packages, opportunities for higher studies obtained by the students and improvement in the number of qualified permanent faculty members and their research outcomes are some of the parameters which contributed to this achievement. NIT Calicut's uncompromised focus on cutting-edge research, industry collaborations, and entrepreneurship has further supported its standing in the Engineering domain. NIT Calicut also retained its position as the best engineering institution in Kerala, the second and third being IIST Trivandrum (rank-48) and IIT Palakkad (rank-69) respectively.

NITC’s ranking in the Management stream improved by 9 positions and reached 75th position. The improvement in ranking is attributed to the improved scores in all the ranking parameters such as research, publication, consultancy and teaching and learning. The institute is duty-bound to disseminate the managerial skills to the professionals through Executive and skill development programmes and class room training.

The institute's continuous pursuit of innovation, industry engagement, and nurturing future leaders has positioned it as a prominent institution in Innovation, Engineering, Architecture and Planning, and Management domains.

On this achievement, Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT Calicut said, “We have made several efforts in the last couple of years to improve the teaching-learning process and research. Apart from significant improvements in research funding brought by faculty members, Institute’s focus on supporting research and innovation by UG students through special financial support schemes have resulted in increased number of publications and patents. The improvements in ranking as well as recent achievements in NBA accreditation are examples for the quality of education and research that we carry out, and we are poised to greater heights in the years to come. I congratulate my faculty, staff and students for this remarkable achievement”

Prof. P. S. Sathidevi, Deputy Director and  Chairperson of the Centre for Quality Assurance and Enhancement (CQAE) said, “NIT Calicut’s positions in ranking parameters such as teaching-learning resources which is an indicator of the high quality teaching process and graduate outcomes which comprise of campus placements, higher studies as well as academic results are the best among top NITs and many new IITs in the country. We restrict the class strength to a maximum of 50 students and engage multiple batches. Though this requires more resources, it allows greater interaction between faculty and students and it is one of the reasons for the excellent score in multiple parameters”.  Prof. T. K. Sindhu, NIRF Coordinator of the Institute and Prof. Sameer S. M., Dean (Academic) also shared the view that the improved ranking in all aspects as well as the new curriculum structure that the Institute going to adopt in the coming academic year will help to attract high quality students to the campus.

NITC Director Prof. Prasad Krishna received the award from Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, Hon'ble Minister of State for Education, Govt. of India, in a function held at New Delhi today.
