NIT Calicut celebrated National Sports Day
National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) celebrated National Sports Day with a week-long series of events, marking the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The celebrations saw enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and non-faculty members across the institute. The Centre for Student Activities and Sports, in collaboration with CWSE, NCC, NSS, SGC, and other units, organized a diverse and engaging program, bringing the NITC community together to honour the spirit of sportsmanship and physical fitness. The events highlighted the importance of sports in promoting unity, health, and excellence among the participants.
The National Sports Day celebration at NITC kicked off with a Mini Marathon, drawing around 300 participants, and was officially flagged off by Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NITC. In his inaugural address, Prof. Krishna emphasized the importance of physical fitness and urged participants to strengthen their minds by maintaining a healthy body through regular sports activities. He also paid tribute to Major Dhyan Chand's immense contributions to Indian sports and announced that the upcoming sports complex at NITC would be named in his honour.
In addition to the marathon, the event featured a lively Zumba session that energized the participants. The festivities also included a Tug of War between the institute's sports team and a penalty shootout for students, adding a competitive and fun spirit to the celebration. These activities not only commemorated National Sports Day but also reinforced the importance of physical fitness and community engagement at NITC.
