‘Jwala’ Ignites Sporting Excellence at NIT Calicut

Arjuna Awardee Shri Tom Joseph Honours Annual Sports Day 2025–26

The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) celebrated its Annual Sports Day 2025–26, themed “Jwala”, with great enthusiasm on Wednesday. The institute’s athletic tracks came alive with energy, determination, and competitive spirit as students, faculty, and staff participated in various sporting events. The celebration reflected NIT Calicut’s strong commitment to holistic education, where academic excellence goes hand in hand with physical fitness and sportsmanship.

The programme was graced by Shri Tom Joseph, former Captain of the Indian International Volleyball Team and an Arjuna Awardee, who attended the event as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, Shri Tom Joseph highlighted the indispensable role of sports in students’ lives. Drawing from his illustrious sporting career, he shared personal experiences that illustrated how discipline, resilience, teamwork, and dedication learned through sports play a crucial role in overcoming challenges in life. He encouraged students to make physical activity a regular part of their daily routine and to cultivate a healthy competitive spirit for overall personal development.

The event was attended by Dr. Sunil Jacob John, Registrar-in-charge, and Dr. Satyanda Panda, Dean of Students Welfare, who congratulated the students and appreciated the organizing committee for the smooth and successful conduct of the Sports Day.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Dhanesh Rambeth, SAS Officer, highlighted NIT Calicut’s growing presence on the national sports platform. He specially commended the institute’s athletes for their excellent performances in recent Inter-NIT Sports Meets, which have brought pride and recognition to the institute.

The celebrations concluded with a vibrant prize distribution ceremony, where winners were honoured amidst loud cheers and applause from fellow students and staff. The event reinforced NIT Calicut’s core belief that excellence is a way of life, whether in academics, research, or sports.
