Historic MoA Signing Marks Major Milestone in NIT Calicut’s Startup Journey
The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut) witnessed a historic milestone in its innovation and entrepreneurship journey with the successful conduct of the MoA Signing Ceremony for Institute Faculty and Student Startups. The ceremony marked the first occasion in the history of NIT Calicut in which such a large number of Institute startups formally signed MoAs with the Institute in a single programme for equity sharing, marking a major step forward in strengthening the Institute’s startup ecosystem.
NIT Calicut currently has 32 Institute startups, comprising 11 faculty-led startups and 21 student-led startups, with several more startups in the pipeline. The increasing number of students and faculty members coming forward to establish startups reflects the growing entrepreneurial culture within the Institute and the increasing translation of campus innovations and research into entrepreneurial ventures.
The event was presided over by the Director, NIT Calicut, Prof. Prasad Krishna, and was graced by the participation of Deans, Centre Chairpersons, Heads of Departments, Assistant Registrars and other senior officials of the Institute, along with representatives of the participating startups.
The growing startup ecosystem at NIT Calicut is supported through the Centre for Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Incubation (CIEI), under which key institutional initiatives including the IPR Cell, Design Innovation Centre (DIC), Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) and NITC Foundation for Technology Business Incubation (NITCFTBI) function. The continued support of the Institute through institutional funding, infrastructure and encouragement has played an important role in fostering an enabling environment for innovation and entrepreneurship.
The MoAs provide a formal framework for supporting and nurturing Institute startups through incubation, mentoring, infrastructure, networking, intellectual property support, technology transfer, funding facilitation, and testing or trial-run facilities, wherever applicable under the approved policies and norms of the Institute.
The initiative is aligned with the National Innovation and Startup Policy (NISP 2019) and the Startup Policy and Operational Norms of NIT Calicut, providing an institutional framework to support startups as they progress from innovative ideas and research outcomes towards technologies, products and sustainable enterprises.
The ceremony also highlighted NIT Calicut’s continued efforts to strengthen its incubation infrastructure. The Director has approved ₹8 crore towards the interior development of the space allotted for NITCFTBI. The proposed facility will further enhance the Institute’s incubation capacity and provide improved infrastructure and support for startups emerging from the NIT Calicut ecosystem.
The successful completion of the MoA signing process marks a new chapter in NIT Calicut’s startup journey, bringing a large number of faculty and student ventures under a formal institutional framework and strengthening the pathway from innovation and research to entrepreneurship, technology development and enterprise creation.
