Digital Humanities in Practice: Tools, Methods, Applications (DHP’25)
The three-day workshop Digital Humanities in Practice: Tools, Methods, Applications (DHP’25) was inaugurated by Prof. Maya Dodd of FLAME University. The workshop is funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation and jointly organized by the Department of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and the Centre for Information, Technology Research and Automation (CITRA).
Day One featured plenary lectures by Prof. Maya Dodd and Ms. Prakruti Maniar of the Purple Pencil Project, followed by a panel discussion titled “Doing Digital Humanities in India: Opportunities and Challenges.” The panel included Dr. Gigi J. Alex (IIST Thiruvananthapuram), Dr. Gayathri G. R. (IIIT Kottayam), and Mr. Jorlin Jose (IIST Thiruvananthapuram).
Day Two and Day Three will include sessions on TEI and XML, data scraping, and no-code software tools for data mining such as Orange, introducing participants to a range of software used for data mining, visualization, and analysis. The technical sessions will be led by Dr. Ebin Deni Raj (IIST Kottayam), Mr. Sabeerali K. P. (Finch Innovate), Mr. Benil Joseph (NITC), Dr. Bimal P. (NITC), and Dr. Labeeba (NITC). Dr. Fathom Rashna Kallingal will deliver a valedictory plenary titled “Inclusive Digital Humanities: Gender-Transformative Approaches for Equitable Change.”
The workshop also included four days of online engagement prior to the in-person sessions. Prof. Nirmala Menon, Dr. Tonisha Guin, Dr. P. N. Bala Subramanian, and Prof. V. Ganeshan delivered lectures on various aspects of DH practice and research in India. The pre-workshop series also included a practical hands-on session on LaTeX and documentation.
The workshop was attended by 56 participants from various universities and institutions across India, in both online and offline modes. The event was coordinated by Dr. Vrinda Varma of the Department of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
