CIKS–NIT Calicut Felicitates Eminent Farmer on Kerala Karshaka Dinam
As Kerala welcomed Chingam, the month symbolising prosperity, renewal and the beginning of a new agricultural season, the Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems (CIKS), NIT Calicut felicitated eminent farmer Sri Sunilkumar K. for his lifelong dedication to preserving traditional agricultural practices, indigenous crop varieties, environmental sustainability and Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.
Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT Calicut, felicitated Sri Sunilkumar K. by presenting him with a ponnada and a memento, and commended his remarkable efforts to conserve traditional crop varieties and prevent their extinction. He emphasised the urgent need to preserve traditional agricultural knowledge, practices and the cultural values associated with farming.
Dr .Ashish Awasthi, Chairperson, CIKS, highlighted the importance of modernising agriculture while ensuring harmony with nature and ecological sustainability. He also spoke about CIKS’s initiative to establish and maintain an Oushadodyanam (medicinal plant garden) on the NIT Calicut campus to promote traditional knowledge, biodiversity and sustainable practices.
The programme celebrated farmers who continue to safeguard Kerala’s agricultural biodiversity and indigenous knowledge. It also reaffirmed that preserving traditional knowledge is not simply about looking to the past, it is about carrying valuable wisdom forward for future generations.
