20th Convocation Ceremony held at NIT Calicut
An all-time high of 1979 were awarded degrees
The 20th Convocation ceremony of National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) was held on the campus today. Shri. George Kurian, Hon. Minister of state for Minority Affairs and Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Govt. of India, was the chief guest at the Convocation Ceremony.
“When India accomplishes Viksit Bharat 2047, the young graduates of today will be the leaders of the country, leading industry and economy,” said Shri. George Kurian, Hon. Minister of state for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying. The duty of the government and the professionals will be to support the people and enhance their income by promoting and marketing their efforts, he said adding “Each and every moment of your life, you will be contributing to the country”.
Highlighting the literacy and health achievements of Kerala, he urged the students from Kerala and outside Kerala to be the ambassadors of Kerala, said the Minister. He also urged them to start their business in Kerala and support the state from when they completed their higher education.
By implementing NEP 2020, the Government is envisaging to have a major revamping of our education system and regain the position of our country as Vishwa Guru, which we have lost in between due to various reasons, said Shri. George Kurian.
Prof. Prasad Krishna, Chairperson, BoG in-charge & Director (NITC), presided over the function and declared the convocation ceremony open and presented the report. NITC is the largest NIT in country with over 7800 students, 425 faculty and 330 staff members, said Prof. Prasad Krishna.
Highlighting the placement achievements of NITC, Prof. Prasad Krishna said “196 companies recruited from NITC in 2023-24 academic year, leading to 1,011 placements for graduates”. Undergraduates secured jobs with a highest salary of 50.6 lakhs, while postgraduates had a maximum salary of 39.3 lakhs, he said adding that the average salary for the year was 10.86 lakh.
Shri. Milind Lakkad (distinguished Alumnus of the 1985 batch of Mechanical Engineering Department and Distinguished Alumni Award), Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Tata Consultancy Services was the Guest of Honour. Success is the result of passion combined with consistency and persistence, he said during his address and added that the next most important aspect of a graduate’s journey after passion was Lifelong Learning.
Registrar of the institute Cdr. (Dr) M. S. Shamasundara, Dean (Academic) Prof. A.V. Babu and the Heads of various Departments administered the convocation ceremony.
Graduates:
An all-time high of 1979 graduands were awarded their degrees during the convocation, which included 1169 B.Tech., 57 B.Arch., 442 M.Tech., 23 M.Plan., 56 MCA, 44 MBA, 94 M.Sc., and 94 PhD degrees.
Gold Medalists and Best Outgoing Students
Ms. A. Anjana from the Civil Engineering branch who secured the highest CGPA (9.88/10) among all the outgoing UG students of the Institute was awarded the *‘Er. M L Bapna Gold Medal’ and a cash prize of Rs.11,111/-. She also bagged the ‘Prof. Allesu Kanjirathinkal Memorial Award’* and Cash prize of Rs.10,000/- for the topper among all UG programmes.
Among the PG students, Mr. Syed Abdul Khader Jeelan Arafath from the M.Tech Electrical Engineering in Power Systems bagged the *‘Er. M L Bapna Gold Medal’* and a cash prize of Rs.11,111/- with a CGPA of 9.9 out of 10.
Mr. Alias George from the Electronics and Communication Engineering branch secured the *Canara Bank sponsored Outstanding Achiever Award* and cash prize of Rs.25,000/-. He was also awarded with the *Vikram Sarabhai Ever Rolling Trophy* sponsored by the first batch of REC Calicut for the Best Outgoing UG Student.
Toppers
Toppers of the 10 B. Tech, B. Arch, 24 M. Tech, M. Plan, 3 M.Sc., MCA and MBA programmes of the Institute were also awarded Gold Medals for their outstanding performance in their respective specializations.
