Global Conference on Decarbonising India (GCDI’25)

The Global Conference on Decarbonizing India (GCDI’25) was officially inaugurated today at Aryabhatta Hall, NIT Calicut, bringing together global experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore innovative pathways toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.

The inaugural session began with a solemn prayer, followed by a welcome address from Dr. A. Shaija, Chair of GCDI’25 and Chairperson of the Centre for Clean Energy and Circular Economy (C-CECE) at NIT Calicut. The ceremonial lighting of the lamp, performed by all invited dignitaries, symbolised a collective commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

In his Presidential Address, Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut, highlighted the institution's dedication to fostering collaborations that drive impactful research and innovation in decarbonisation and clean energy technologies. The Chief Guest, Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon'ble Union Cabinet Minister for Road Transport and Highways, joined virtually to deliver the Inaugural Address. He outlined India’s policy initiatives and strategic vision to achieve carbon neutrality in the transportation and infrastructure sectors.

The session also featured insightful addresses from distinguished Guests of Honour. Dr. Ranjith Krishna Pai, Senior Director, Climate, Energy, and Sustainable Technology (CEST) at the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, discussed the opportunities available through DST projects for fostering indigenous hydrogen technologies. Dr. P.V. Aravind from the University of Groningen, Netherlands, spoke about the development of the hydrogen value chain through publicprivate partnerships, emphasising the importance of collaboration in the energy transition. Dr. Naomi Boness, Managing Director of the Natural Gas Initiative at Stanford University, reinforced the significance of the conference in the global energy landscape and the urgency of decarbonisation. Mr. P. Jayadevan, Retired Executive Director of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), underscored the need for India to accelerate its energy transition and develop a comprehensive energy index to guide policy and industry strategies.

The inaugural session concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Panneerselvam R, Co-Chair of GCDI’25 and Chairperson of the Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CST) at NIT Calicut. He expressed gratitude to the esteemed guests, the organising committee, and participants for their contributions to the success of the conference.

GCDI’25 will host multiple technical sessions, industry panels, and exhibitions, showcasing pioneering research and technological advancements in sustainable energy. The conference underscores NIT Calicut’s role as a hub for sustainable innovation and climate action. The event is jointly hosted by NITC’s Centre for Clean Energy and Circular Economy (C-CECE) and Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CST).
