M.Tech in High Voltage and Renewable Energy Engineering

The programme M. Tech High Voltage and Renewable Energy Engineering will be offered from the academic year 2026-27 onwards. NIT Calicut’s new M.Tech in High Voltage and Renewable Energy Engineering is closely aligned with the changing needs of India’s power sector, where renewable generation, high- voltage transmission, and intelligent equipment management are increasingly converging. The programme is especially relevant because it prepares students not only in renewable-energy generation, but also in the advanced high-voltage technologies required to evacuate, transmit, monitor, and protect power from large renewable installations.

Its emphasis on advanced insulation systems and semiconductor packaging is important in the present context, since modern renewable-energy converters, high-voltage modules, and fast-switching power devices must operate under severe electrical stress, thermal loading, and long service conditions.

The inclusion of AI and digital twin based condition assessment adds another important dimension, as future substations, transformers, cables, converters, and renewable assets will increasingly depend on data-driven diagnostics, predictive maintenance, and virtual performance models rather than only scheduled maintenance practices.

The programme also gains national relevance from the fact that India is moving ahead with major renewable-energy developments such as the Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Gujarat, large-scale offshore wind initiatives along the Gujarat and Tamil Nadu coasts, and the National Green  Hydrogen Mission. These developments require strong expertise inhigh-voltage engineering, power-electronic interfaces, system integration, and reliable grid operation, all of which are systematically addressed in the curriculum.

Graduates can find opportunities in utilities, transformer and cable industries, insulation design, testing laboratories, power-equipment manufacturing, and HVDC-related projects. They can contribute to solar and wind integration, smart grids, AI-enabled diagnostics, power-converter technology, and next-generation energy infrastructure.
