NITC organises International conference on infrastructure

A two-day international conference ‘RAID 24 (Recent Advances in Infrastructure Development 2024)’ at NIT Calicut, held on Monday and Tuesday discussed different aspects of infrastructure development. The conference organised by the Department of Civil Engineering (CED) brought together experts from academia and industry to discuss the recent advancements in the sector.

The conference, aimed to bring together researchers and academics from India and around the world, discussed advancements in relevant fields to foster the exchange of ideas. Deliberations on various infrastructural developments were also part of the conference.

Prof. Manoranjan Parida, Director of CSIR-CRRI, New Delhi, inaugurated the conference. According to him, the challenge faced by the public transport sector is to motivate 75 per cent of the people who are currently using private transport systems to public transport systems.

He also stressed the need for introducing sustainable materials, including industry waste, for infrastructure development to ensure the construction of maintenance-free roads. He also talked about the need to focus on the socio-economic aspects of development apart from the technological aspects.

Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut, stressed the importance of improving the quality of life along with infrastructure development in his presidential address. People have limited themselves to silos and couches after the pandemic, and we need to break the silos and express compassion and kindness to humanity as well as all other living beings.

Prof. Suresh Bhalla, Professor of IIT Delhi, was the guest of honour at the function. Prof. T M Madhavan Pillai, Head of CED; Prof. Praveen Nagarajan, Organising Secretary of RAID 2024 and  Dr. Prateek Negi, Organising Secretary RAID 2024 also spoke. The programme was coordinated by Dr. M Yogesh Kumar and Dr. Hillol Chakravarthy, assistant professors of CED.

As part of the conference, NITC also inked a memorandum of understanding with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)- Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), a premier national laboratory for infrastructure development. The MoU aims to encourage direct contact and cooperation between the institutes. Academic and research collaboration in the areas of mutual interest and joint research programmes, conferences and workshops.

MoU was inked by Prof. Manoranjan Parida for CSIR-CRRI and Prof. Jose Mathew, Chairperson Centre for Industry Institutional Relations, NITC.
