NIT Calicut to get new academic complex

National Institute of Calicut is gearing up to improve infrastructure facilities to comply with the National Education Policy 2020 guidelines. The institute will get a new academic block soon to meet the space requirements with the increasing number of students.

The Union Government has sanctioned Rs 37.2 crore for the new academic block to ensure infrastructure support as the student and staff strength has been continuously increasing with the introduction of new programmes. NITC is launching new academic programmes in M Tech and Integrated B.Sc-B.Ed from this academic year.

“The institute is planning large-scale infrastructure development to provide a spacious and state-of-the-art ambience for the students,” said Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NITC. The campus is spread across 285 acres of land and we are set to introduce a series of futuristic facilities on the campus, he said adding that all the developmental works on the campus will be completed according to the masterplan.

The block will accommodate 21 classrooms, 42 faculty single rooms and 21 faculty double rooms. In addition, it has room for accommodating research scholars.

“The New Academic Block is a project sanctioned under the EWS (Economically Weaker Section) scheme of the Ministry of Education,” said Dr. Priya Chandran, Dean (Planning and Development). We expect the work to be complete by December 2024, she said.

As per the plan, the new block will be constructed on 7 floors (G+6) with a total plinth area of 9073 sq metres. Apart from classrooms and faculty rooms, the building will also accommodate 21 laboratories.

The building will have two lifts, two main stairs and a fire escape stairway. All facilities to cater the needs of the differently abled users also will be available in the building., said Dr. Sajith A. S., Professor of Civil Engineering & Superintending Engineer (in charge), Engineering Unit of NIT Calicut. The work has been entrusted to the Central Public Works Department and the preliminary works have already been started, he said.
