PM awards 5G Use-case lab to NIT Calicut

Students, faculty and staff from NITC and many other Institutions in Kozhikode joined the event through video conference

The National Institute of Technology Calicut on Friday received a 5G Use-Case laboratory for enhancing research in wireless communication and connectivity to the rural community.

NIT Calicut received the lab under the ‘100 5G labs initiative’ by the Department of Telecommunication, Govt. of India. The initiative aims to introduce research opportunities in the 5G sector and prepare a 6 G-ready academia and start-up ecosystem. 

The '100 5G Use-case labs initiative was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. He also awarded the 5 G Use-case Lab to the National Institute of Technology Calicut and 99 other academic institutions in the country.

 The academic institutions were selected for the project based on the proposals submitted by them. The proposal for NIT Calicut was prepared and submitted by a team of faculty members from the departments of Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering.

Dr. Nujoom Sageer Karat and Dr. Srinivasarao C, Assistant Professors of the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of NIT Calicut, joined the event in New Delhi. Besides, over 1500 members of the NITC community, including faculty, staff and students as well as students and faculty from KMCT group of Institutions, AWH Engineering College, Kozhikode and Spring Valley School, Kozhikode witnessed the event virtually. 

According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the 5G labs and related research will foster development in socio-economic sectors. Youth will make the best use of the lab for research and to realise their dream, said the Prime Minister after awarding the lab to NITC and other institutions. He has also mentioned that unlike the previous wireless revolutions, India is going to take a lead role in the 5G/6G technology developments. 

Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut and Prof. Sameer S.M., Dean (Academic) interacted with the participants. NIT Calicut also organised talk sessions after the launch ceremony. 

A talk on ‘Introduction to 5G’ by Dr. Vinay Joseph, Assistant Professor of Electronics explained the recent advancements in the communication sector. A quiz competition was also held at NIT Calicut as part of the event.
