NIT Calicut celebrates success as three alumni crack UPSC Civil Service Exam

Batchmates cracked the exam together

The National Institute of Technology Calicut is basking in pride as three alumni from the same batch of the institute emerge victorious in the UPSC Civil Service Examination (CSE). Among them, two are from the Mechanical Engineering Department, while one is from the Electrical Engineering Department.

Febin Jose Thomas and Shilja Jose, both from the 2015-19 batch of Mechanical Engineering, along with Amritha Satheepan from the Electrical Engineering Department, have achieved this remarkable feat.

Febin, presently undergoing training at the National Academy of Direct Taxes in Nagpur, has secured the 133rd rank in the exam and is aspiring to join the Indian Police Service. His previous success in 2022-23, where he secured the 254th rank, helped him join the Indian Revenue Services (Income Tax).

"Since my 9th standard, I've aspired to become a civil servant. However, it was during my third and fourth year of graduation at NITC that I started serious preparations for it," shared Febin. "I dedicated myself to my dream, spending countless hours reading newspapers and books at the Institute Library. A supportive group of friends with similar aspirations kept me focused," he added.

The trio had nurtured their ambition to serve the nation since their days at NITC, persistently working towards cracking the Civil Service Examination even amidst their rigorous academic schedule.

Amritha Satheepan, an alumna of the Electrical Engineering department, shares in the elation over her accomplishment. She cracked CSE in her first attempt after resigning from Vedanta Aluminum, Odisha as a Technical Analyst.

“Being a civil servant was my ambition ever since my school days but this was fuelled up during my graduation period as I got an opportunity to join the flood relief activities and witness the role of Civil Servants in such crucial activities,” said Ms. Amritha. NITC played a crucial role in nurturing me by building my confidence, communication skills etc and the companionship of many like-minded people on the campus helped me focus on my dream, she added.

Shilja Jose, who is currently working as a Mechanical Design Engineer at Tech Systems in Bangalore is elated as she cleared the exam along with her friends Amritha and Febin. “Everybody used to call us twins during our campus days and I am excited, she said adding that Febin had helped her with preparation tips.

According to Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut, alumni of different batches of NITC are playing lead roles in government and private sectors. The recent achievement is a feather on the cap of NITC, he said.

Adding to this Prof. M K Ravi Varma, Dean (International, Alumni, and Corporate Relations) said “Many of our alumni currently serve in prestigious roles like IAS, IFS, IPS, and other civil service sectors”.
