To address the pressing issues of climate change and carbon dioxide emissions, National Institute of Technology Calicut organized an international seminar titled 'Clean Energy for Sustainable Environment.' The seminar, held under the auspices of the Centre for Clean Energy and Circular Economy (C-CECE), featured experts and researchers from around the globe.

The distinguished keynote speaker, Professor Shuichi Torii from Kumamoto University, Japan, led a session focusing on renewable energy and the technological advancements essential for combating climate change. Professor Torii emphasized the urgency of addressing global warming, the greenhouse effect, and the escalating carbon dioxide emissions. He underscored that governments worldwide are increasingly interested in bioenergy production as a crucial step in mitigating the impacts of climate change and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Highlighting Japan's unique energy landscape, Professor Torii pointed out that the country heavily relies on energy imports due to the lack of domestic resources. He emphasized the significance of developing a biomass utilization type of society as a sustainable solution. The speaker suggested various measures to counteract global warming, including energy conservation, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, and the promotion of renewable energy sources such as solar, tidal, wind, geothermal, biofuel, and biomass energy.

Engineers and scientists are responsible for making the environment livable and sustainable for human beings and other living beings, said Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut during his presidential address. All countries are working on energy management and engineers can play an important role in supporting them, he added.

Prof. A. Shaija, Chairperson of C-CECE, and Dr. P Arun and Dr. Deepa S.N., Vice-Chairpersons of C-CECE also addressed the participants.

The seminar featured other distinguished speakers who presented research papers on diverse topics related to clean energy. Dr. Pradeepkumar Ashok, Senior Research Scientist from The University of Texas at Austin, discussed the potential of geothermal energy in India. Dr. Vinod Kumar Sharma, Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIT Calicut, shared insights on "Hydrogen for Future Energy Applications." Professor Sajith V, from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NIT Calicut, addressed the use of "Phase Change Materials for Thermal Management" and Dr.Ajith Gopi, Additional Chief Technical Manager ANERT discussed the "Renewable Energy Scenario in Kerala."

The seminar concluded with an engaging panel discussion, providing a platform for participants to exchange ideas and perspectives on the imperative transition to clean and sustainable energy sources.
