Abstract

Natural ventilation is one of the passive strategies to maintain thermal comfort in buildings. This strategy has been explored for a dining space in a high rise commercial building in temperate climate zone of Bangalore. The weather of Bangalore offers comfortable temperature for thermal comfort. Therefore, natural ventilation was achieved by analyzing the climate of Bangalore. Automated operable windows was designed to control the wind speed in the range of 1.0–1.5 m/s thereby maintaining a ventilation rate in the range of 21–24 changes per hour. The ventilation maintained a temperature below 30 °C achieving thermal comfort for diners. Window opening was maintained in the range of 15–95% controlling the outdoor wind speed varying between 1.2 and 7.8 m for 64% of occupancy hours in dining space.

Research Project as Principal Investigator at TERI

• 1. As principal investigator, conducted performance study of SHARP Air purifier in composite (Delhi) and moderate (Bangalore) climate. In this study, the effectiveness of air purifiers was studied in the removal of particulate matter PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 along with various gaseous pollutants in indoor spaces.

• 2. Performance analysis of masonry block by manufacturers for maintaining thermal comfort and temperature regulation in indoor climate in office and residential blocks.

• 3. Validation of Trnsys software for predicting zone temperature of commercial office space. The study compared the recorded zone air temperature with the output DBT of the space simulated in Trnsys software. Project Involved: High-Performance Commercial Buildings in India Developed by TERI, supported by US- Department of State and Bureau of Energy Efficiency, under the aegis of Asia Pacific Partnership

• 4. Preparation of submittals of the GRIHA rating system in compliance with norms and standards for Environment Clearance of Large Construction Projects (Construction Manual), Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.

• 5. Recommendation for windows and envelope in building bye-law of Bangalore to achieve desired thermal comfort through natural ventilation under the project of Modification of Building Bye Law of Bangalore by Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership.

• 6. Evaluation of the effect of landscape on the micro-climate of a residence in a hot & dry climate where the dry-bulb temperature & daylight was recorded and analyzed.

• 7. Design and installation of Sky-therm System, shading, and construction supervision for Solar Energy Based Energy Efficient Model Rearing House for Silkworm Seed Crop Rearing.

• 8. Energy audits of commercial spaces involving thermal & daylight measurements, electrical consumptions for HVAC & lighting for compliance to ECBC compliance and ,desgning high-performance commercial buildings. Project Involved: (a) High High-Performanceercial Buildings in India Developed by TERI, supported by US- Department of State and Bureau of Energy Efficiency, under the aegis of Asia Pacific Partnership. (b) ECBC compliance study for Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
