    • Faculty Research Grant of Rs. 5, 00, 000/- from NIT Calicut for the proposal “Experimental studies on A356 alloy and Al2O3 nano composite castings produced in a newly developed multiple casting machine” in 2011-2013 for duration of 3 years. (Completed)

      Multiple Casting Machine is developed in M.Tech Material Science Lab for experimental project work. 

      Porosity and inclusions are potential internal structural defects found in conventional castings. The casting voids, most often referred to as porosity, are caused by gas formation and solidification shrinkage. Porosity and inclusions reduce material strength. In-order to reduce these defects, an innovative multiple casting machine in-built with different casting facilities are envisaged, developed and fabricated. This new machine has a melting furnace, heated metal transfer pipe connecting furnace to mould, a stirring facility to mix reinforcing nano-powder to make composite and a hydraulic power pack for imparting squeezing pressure on molten metal. The machine is capable of performing Gravity Casting (G.C), Vacuum Casting (V.C), Squeeze Casting (Sq. C) and Stir Casting (S.C).The newly developed multiple facility casting machine was able to produce porous free aluminium alloy castings with excellent properties. Application of the required squeeze pressure by the hydraulic press and keeping uniform distribution of nano particles in the liquid metal contribute together to produce cavity free sound castings and nano composites in this machine.
