Rapid Prototyping (RP), that combines Computer Aided Design (CAD) and generation of physical objects, is one of the vital components of Reverse Engineering (RE). The Centre at NIT Calicut is equipped with one of the latest versions of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) machines of STRATASYS, USA. FDM is an additive technique to produce the prototype of physical objects. With additive fabrication, the machine reads the data from the CAD drawing in the form of STL files and lays down successive layers of materials to build up the prototype. The primary advantage to additive fabrication is its ability to create almost any shape or geometric feature. These prototypes can be used extensively for the validation of Design and Mechanism.
